Hersham Village Hall and Centre for the Community (Day Centre) Closure / New plans? / Maintenance issues etc

Hersham Village Hall and Hersham Centre for the Community
The article refers to both buildings having complex mechanical and electrical installations which are at the end of their useful life and as such have an impact on the fire integrity of the buildings.
Elmbridge BC say they will …. “bring forward plans in the Autumn to the relevant stakeholders to re-provide an enhanced facility as part of longer term plans for the Hersham Village Hall site. In the meantime, work will commence to the Hersham Centre for the Community and it will reopen as soon as possible. We apologise for the immediate nature of this decision but the safety of our residents has to be our primary focus”

At the 2017 HRA AGM Nina Malyon gave an excellent talk about her work as Manager of Hersham and Walton Food Bank which has its main store in Falkners Road Hersham.
It was suggested that this deserved a separate post on the HRA Blog to help highlight the excellent work which its dedicated volunteers carry out – made possible by generous donations from the public.
It was explained that food is distributed to individuals and families etc on the basis of referrals from other agencies so that it can be targeted to those who need help through difficult periods when for a range of reasons money is tight.
Some of the statistics referenced during the talk highlight the scale of the operation.
Foodbank usage in Hersham and Walton for the financial year 1/4/16 – 31/3/17
- 1,299 people were fed in this period.
- 800 adults and 499 children.
- 519 three day emergency food supplies were issued in the period.
During the same period (2016 – 2017) figures released from the Trussell Trust show that 1,182,954 food parcels were issued nationally.
Walton and Hersham foodbank is supported by Walton Charity and St Peters Church.

The HRA’s AGM and public meeting went very well and as normal provided a good opportunity to catch up on HRA activity and discuss matters of interest or concern for Hersham and its residents. After the meeting there was an excellent speaker on the Hersham and Walton foodbank.

HRA response to the EBC local plan consultation – Feb 24th 2017
The Hersham Residents Association’s response to the Elmbridge Borough Council local plan consultation can be downloaded here.
Many thanks to those who contributed by emailing views and suggestions and committee members who helped shape the response.
No doubt there will be further discussions and debate as Elmbridge Council develop their local plan proposals on the basis of feedback received.

The government has ordered Elmbridge Council to prepare plans to permit 9,000 new homes to be built in the borough. Elmbridge has tabled its consultation proposal for comment, by 4 pm on Friday 24 February.The Council proposal is available at Elmbridge Borough Council Consultations – Strategic Options Consultation – Consultation Homepage.In summary, the Report proposes as the preferred option, major housing development on three large sites bordering Cobham, Oxshott and Fairmile . Residents of those communities have objected in large numbers to those proposals.The Report also identifies a number of secondary sites for release and development, including greenbelt land on Queen’s Road bordering Burwood Park. Given the large numbers of objections on the other main sites, at least one one councillor has noted that the Queens Road sites are now his preferred option.Don’t lets risk losing this corridor of green. It’s a vital element of the local visual amenity, and it’s loss would be tragic.
The HRA committee discussed the new local plan at its last meeting and decided to meet again during the Elmbridge local plan exhibition event on Thursday 26 January 7-9pm Civic Centre, High Street, Esher to help finalise the HRA response. (Whilst the Elmbridge deadline has just been extended until 24 February, we would still like to hear views from Hersham residents as soon as possible.)

Our concerns so far relate to:
- the scale of housing required (nearly 10,000 units by 2035) and the impact on infrastructure – particularly traffic but also schools and health services
- questions about how reasonable the targets are for Elmbridge bearing in mind that much of the green belt under consideration across the Borough is land which should have been eliminated at the outset as impossible to develop in view of its protected status, for example common land and land of special scientific interest etc
- the future use of land either side of the Queens Road before and after Sir Richards Bridge Roundabout – this wooded area currently provides a break in what would otherwise become in the view of many of our committee – unchecked urban sprawl
- the document examining small scale parcels of land in Hersham itself which seems to make early judgements about the use and value of the land – apparently seeming to pre-judge the wider consultation; views from Hersham residents which we can feed back to Elmbridge would be valuable.
