Update on the Public Meeting about the future of Hersham at the Waterman’s Arms 8.30 Thursday 18th February

By | January 29, 2016

Update report from the public meeting held on 18th February organised by the HRA to discuss the possibility of a Community Council for Hersham.
Is it time for Hersham to fight back? This was the question put to the public meeting of around 40 people at the Watermans Arms, Hersham on Thursday, 18th February.
Christopher Chauncy, legal expert, brought up in Hersham and whose parents live in Hersham, is keen to help Hersham find the best solution. He said there are only two options open to Hersham people: either accept the changes recently decreed by the boundaries commission and the consequent dismemberment under the new boundaries or petition for a Hersham Community (Parish) Council to be set up.
In the lively discussion which followed, it became clear that few people knew the details of the new boundaries of Hersham or what a Community Council could do. Much work would need to be done to establish a Community Council, including collecting some 1000 signatures on the necessary petition to Elmbridge Council.
No vote was taken. Clearly many people are interested in the Community Council proposal.
Hersham Residents Association Chairman, David Lock, said a larger public meeting would probably be the next step with the circulation of more information.
Original post advertising the meeting: –
If you have not already seen the results of the Boundary Commission review of wards in Elmbridge have a look at the post below dated 12 January.  The area of Hersham in terms of ward boundary lines will be much smaller than is now!
If you would like to discuss this or know more please come to our public meeting on 18th February in the function room at the Waterman’s Arms 8.30.  All welcome – please bring your friends and neighbours.  The meeting will cover:
  • Boundary Changes – feedback views / implications
  • Hersham’s identity
  • The case for Hersham to have its own community (or ‘parish’) council

These are all really important issues for Hersham – so please do come and express your views.

Please note that the public meeting will immediately follow the HRA general knowledge quiz from 7.45 – 8.30 advertised below.  These are quite separate events – but why not come to the quiz as well, both are to be held in the function room at the Watermans – so we look forward to seeing you there.
